Every Tuesday, Here is What I Know will publish a journaling prompt designed to boost self-reflection, personal growth, and creativity. I’ll write along with you, and as a community, we can write our way through whatever life throws at us next.

Tuesday, June 9, 2020: Where Does Your Story Start?

If you were going to tell someone the Story of Your Life, where would you start? Would you start with where and when you were born? Your first memory? Who your parents were?

Perhaps you’d start with a moment that felt like a rebirth or awakening. Maybe you’d choose to start with the beginning of an important relationship, a first job, or a class that you took that redefined how you saw yourself.

For this journal entry, choose a starting point for your current self. You can set the scene or merely make a note of it. The more important part is what comes next: exploring and explaining why this is the starting point you chose.

What does this show about you as a person? Do you feel like you have any fundamental traits that relate back to this starting point? Are these aspects of yourself that you’ve cultivated? Are they things you’ve rebelled against or sought to change?

We all have an origin story and we have the power to choose what that origin story is. Take some time to trace back yours and see how it brought you to the person you are today.
