What it Takes to Make Unfair Seem Cool

We live in a world with many moving parts. Just switch on to the current news climate, and quickly it becomes quite clear just how dysfunctional our nation and world have become.

But what do you do when there is a constant influx of injustice coming at you every which way you turn? Perhaps it’s the promotion you didn’t get despite being more qualified than your coworker. Or how about your mother’s most recent diagnosis? A woman who has nurtured and encouraged you throughout your life. How is it fair for her to suffer?

And then there are the countless people who seem to enjoy inflicting injustice on others as if it’s some sick game they like to play.

Today, being in a position of power is a badge of honor. When leaders boast about injustice, you know we have a severe problem. We live in a time where it may seem as if the nice guys finish last. Like in Hollywood — you know, the theme where the bad guy sporting black leather gets all the chicks and the nice guy with corny glasses gets bullied because he’s still a virgin. But if it’s a well-rounded flick, eventually we will see the nice guy redeemed and, in the end, he gets the girl of his dreams. Suddenly, quality over quantity teaches us all a lesson.

Our culture congratulates people who try to get away with injustice. There are societies of people who support and encourage these narcissistic personalities. Just listen to any given hardcore rap lyric. We glorify violence like it’s worthy of worship. The constant disrespect and degradation of women reminds me that some people still think its “cool” to be a womanizer and a murderer. Look at how the world glorified guys like El Chapo and Pablo Escobar. Here are two guys responsible for the death of hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Yet, they make T-shirts, hats, movies, and songs about these drug-dealing mobsters.

So why does life seem so unfair and what can we do about it?

I am learning that if I consume myself with negative reports from the news, social media, friends, family, or coworkers, I will morph into a ticking time bomb. I cannot stress how important it is to shield yourself from bad news. In times like these, turn on the TV at any hour or surf the web and boom! There is a news story that will ruin your day. Now, I’m not saying don’t go and educate yourself about what’s going on in the world. What I’m suggesting is this: Don’t obsess and take in all the bad news that comes at you daily.

It’s truly a matter of self-preservation. With all the injustices in the world, consuming bad news every day can affect your world view.  Your mental and physical health depends on what you feed it, so try and fill your mind with positive news reports. Don’t call that one family member who is always talking negative. Give them space so you have time to recover.

It’s true – life limits what we can do with all the injustices in the world. But I find that it’s all about our attitude and how we manage those injustices. It’s also important to acknowledge that the people who are seemingly unfair don’t actually “get away” with anything! There’s an adage that says, “What goes around comes around.”

You see, before you try and take on problems that are out of your control, know that there is a more significant, more powerful law that will take care of this for you. There’s no need to play judge or jury; sit back and allow life to take its course. In the meantime, get involved, be productive, and do what you can do to tip the scales of injustice in our nation and around the world.

I believe that we reap what we sow. Although it may appear that justice was not served, just wait for it. Sit back and wait for justice to prevail because, eventually, she will!
