Don’t Compare Yourself to the YouTube Trainers

Whether by choice or necessity, a lot of us these days are relying on YouTube to be our personal trainer and give us ways to workout when we’re home. I don’t know about you, but the minute I click on a new workout, I’m usually overwhelm with the following wonderful emotions: envy, insecurity, dread and maybe some loathing thrown in there for good measure. My goodness, these trainers and wannabe-workout stars have the cutest spaces, the best fitting outfits and the most perfect bodies. Just what I need to get me motivated to workout (can you feel the eye roll?) Well some of those negatives feelings do act as good motivation to get me moving, but sometimes it just all feels a little too perfect and unattainable!

And that’s why I’m here to remind you that it’s designed to feel that way. Like any good YouTube producer, hours and hours of time has been put into these workouts, everything from the setting to the hair, makeup and workout clothes have been labored over by the trainer. Nothing is left up to chance even with the most casual looking workout. Many of the stars of these videos work as trainers, so it’s their job to workout. That gives some content to why everything looks so good.

That doesn’t mean you can’t have goals to be in great shape or aspire to their level, it’s just important to never be too hard on yourself and compare your life to theirs based on a workout series.

With that said, there’s no reason not to feel cute and comfy while you’re doing your home workouts. Here’s some of my favorite pieces to get your workout off to the right start. What I love best is a lot of these can also act as attractive lounge-wear so they can do double-duty, hence the term athleisure I guess.

High Performing Sports Bra

How cool is the SheFit sports bra? It’s so adjustable with its “ Zip. Cinch. Lift. technology” it lets you pull straps, tighten where you need and add support where it works for you. With sizes for A to I cups, this bra is engineered for maximum support and maximum impact workouts. Their studies show it’s 33% more supportive than typical bras and also looks pretty darn cute too.

Booty-Shaping Leggings

I can’t tell you how much I love Running Girl running pants. Not only are they great at compression and hold up to the deepest of squats, but they will make your butt look so good you’ll want to wear them with EVERYTHING even when you aren’t working out. I’ve never gotten so many compliments for twenty bucks. The secret is in the ruching that you’ll find along the center of the waist. This couple of inches of gathering makes ALL the difference. I don’t understand the physics behind it and I don’t need to, all I know is it’s magic and that’s enough for me.

Workart

If you’re getting tired of the same old black and gray yoga pants, here’s a super fun way to spice up your athleisure wardrobe. Werkshop offers unique tops and leggings all with artwork created by owner, Chriztina Marie. The adorable Huck and Stella mini-collection features the artist’s two puppers gorgeously printed on a pair of leggings. These leggings also come with the added perk of helping the Love Leo Rescue in Los Angeles, CA, which helps other dogs find their forever home. .

Work Those Toes

Grippy socks can save you from some serious slips on hardwood and vinyl home floors. Gaiam makes a full collection, but the coolest have the be their lace-up styles which are also perfect for barre workouts.

Say it with Your Headband

Headbands are often unappreciated, until you’ve moved your hair out of your face for the 30th time on your run. The Bondiband company specializes in making “no slip, no drip” headbands, many with some fun sayings on them. Our favorite at the moment? “Free Hugs, Just Kidding, Don’t Touch Me.” Seems about fitting!
